Throwing at practice
Richardson (shoulder) has resumed throwing at spring practices and looks to be healthy.
Analysis: Head coach Shane Steichen said in March that he expected Richardson to be ready for OTAs in May and June. Steichen's prediction looks to be coming to fruition, though the quarterback won't necessarily be a full participant in all activities coming off surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He resumed throwing in February and is the unquestioned starting quarterback for an offense that just added wideout Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Should be ready for OTAs
Coach Shane Steichen noted Monday that Richardson (right shoulder) "should be" OK for the Colts' OTAs, which take place in May and early June, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: "I like where he's at," Steichen said of Richardson, who is bouncing back from surgery that he underwent on his throwing shoulder in October. "He's progressing really, really well. He's just getting better and better." Per James Boyd of The Athletic, Richardson began throwing again last month, and, considering that, the 2023 first-rounder figures to be eased back into his on-field participation, at least initially. In any case, assuming no setbacks, Richardson is set to reclaim his role as the…read more

Resumes throwing
Richardson has resumed throwing as part of his rehab from right shoulder surgery, per a video posted to his agent Deiric Jackson's X.com account.
Analysis: Richardson is recovering from season-ending surgery undergone Oct. 21 to address a Grade 3 AC Joint sprain suffered Week 5. He also missed time as a rookie due to a concussion suffered Week 2, but it now looks like the 2023 No. 4 overall pick is trending to be cleared well ahead of training camp. Despite appearing in only four games as a rookie, Richardson managed to display the outlandish potential of his unique size and speed profile. Could resume throwing soon
Richardson (shoulder) is ahead of schedule in his rehab and hopes to resume throwing soon, ESPN.com's Stephen Holder reports.
Analysis: It's not clear if his return to throwing is a matter of weeks or months away, but the 2023 fourth overall pick should be healthy long before training camp. Richardson suffered a concussion in Week 2 and a Grade 3 AC Joint sprain in Week 5, with the latter leading to season-ending surgery Oct. 21. Richardson said he struggled to deal with the reality of a lost season for a few weeks, before he eventually "came around and understood [his] purpose" within the Colts organization. Undergoes surgery
Richardson underwent successful surgery Tuesday to address a Grade 3 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder, Colts owner Jim Irsay announced via his personal Twitter account.
Analysis: The Colts placed Richardson on injured reserve Oct. 11 after he sustained the shoulder injury Week 5. The surgery will end Richardson's rookie season, but the Colts are optimistic that he'll be fully healthy ahead of the 2024 campaign. Gardner Minshew will continue serving as the team's starting signal-caller in place of Richardson.

Done for season
The Colts announced Wednesday that Richardson will require season-ending surgery to address a Grade 3 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder.
Analysis: Richardson was placed on injured reserve Oct. 11 after sustaining the injury to his throwing shoulder in the first half of the Colts' Week 5 win over the Titans. Colts owner Jim Irsay had hinted Monday that Richardson would most likely be shut down for the season, and now that he's confirmed to be headed for surgery, the quarterback's rookie campaign will officially come to an end. Season likely done
Colts owner Jim Irsay indicated Monday that Richardson's (shoulder) season is "probably" over, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The expectation last week was that Richardson would be sidelined 4-to-8 weeks due to his Grade 3 right AC joint sprain. However, there's now speculation the first-round pick could need season-ending surgery to address the issue, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Given Irsay's comments, it would seem Indy is in the camp of erring on the side of caution with its prized rookie in order for him to recover without any setbacks. Season-ending surgery possible
The Colts are "strongly" considering the possibility of Richardson (shoulder) undergoing season-ending surgery to address his Grade 3 right AC joint sprain, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Indianapolis is reportedly trying to decide whether season-ending surgery is the best option for ensuring that Richardson is able to recover fully without setbacks, though such a procedure would end his rookie campaign prematurely after just four appearances. Richardson has already sought opinions from at least four specialists, though an MRI revealed the labrum in his right shoulder isn't torn. Expected to miss 4-to-8 weeks
Richardson (shoulder), who was officially placed on injured reserve Wednesday, is expected to miss 4-to-8 weeks and may require surgery, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The Colts could be without Richardson until as late as early December, depending on the pace of his rehab and whether the rookie first-round pick ultimately requires surgery to address the AC joint sprain to his throwing shoulder. Gardner Minshew will step in as the Colts' new starting quarterback in the interim and should provide some stability behind center, but the longer Richardson remains on IR, the more his development could be affected. To miss time
Coach Shane Steichen confirmed Monday that Richardson (shoulder) is dealing with an AC joint sprain and will miss "some time," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Richardson will miss Sunday's upcoming road matchup against the Jaguars, at the very least. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the rookie signal-caller is dealing with a Grade 3 sprain that could result in him being placed on IR for a minimum of four games, though Steichen declined to verify the exact severity of Richardson's injury. Gardner Minshew will lead Indianapolis' offense until Richardson is cleared to retake the field.

Dealing with Grade 3 sprain
Richardson (shoulder) has received an initial injury diagnosis of a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Richardson is scheduled for an MRI on Monday morning to confirm the severity of his injury, but a Grade 3 sprain would likely carry a recovery timetable of a month or more. Rapoport reports that the rookie signal-caller could be headed for a stint on IR. Richardson suffered the injury during Sunday's win over the Titans, getting replaced by Gardner Minshew after completing nine of 12 passing attempts for 98 yards and rushing twice for five yards. Reportedly sprains AC joint
The initial diagnosis for the right (throwing) shoulder injury Richardson sustained Sunday is an AC joint sprain, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Per Pelissero, X-ray were negative, but Richardson will undergo an MRI to further assess the injury. In any case, the QB's status will need to be monitored closely ahead of next weekend's game against the Jaguars, and if Richardson is unavailable, Gardner Minshew would be in line to handle the Colts' Week 6 signal-caller duties.

X-rays on Richardson's injured right shoulder came back negative after he was evaluated in the locker room following his exit from Sunday's game against the Titans, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Richardson has already been ruled out for a return to Sunday's contest, but the fact that he's not dealing with any broken bones is at least a welcome sight. He'll still be sent in for further testing in the coming days as the Colts look to discern whether his shoulder injury is serious enough to prevent him from playing Week 6 in Jacksonville and beyond. Analysis: Per James Boyd of The Athletic, Richardson couldn't lift his right arm as he headed to the locker room. Prior to his departure from the contest, Richardson had completed nine of 12 passing attempts for 98 yards and carried twice for five yards. Three total TDs in loss
Richardson completed 11 of 25 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 56 yards and another score during Sunday's 29-23 overtime loss to the Rams. He also committed two fumbles, losing one, and converted a pair of two-point conversion passes.
Analysis: It was a tale of two halves for the rookie, who was coming off of a concussion that forced him to miss the Colts' previous game against the Ravens. Richardson didn't find the end zone until the second half, finding Mo Alie-Cox with a 35-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter before leading a pair of lengthy touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to force the game into overtime. Good to go Sunday
Coach Shane Steichen relayed Friday that Richardson has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and will start Sunday's game against the Rams, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site reports.
Analysis: Richardson has been practicing fully this week, and now that the QB has gained medical clearance, he'll return to action after missing his team's Week 3 win over the Ravens. As a result, Gardner Minshew will return to backup duties, while the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft will look to lead to the 2-1 Colts to a third straight victory this weekend.

Richardson (concussion) was a full practice participant Thursday.
Analysis: Richardson has turned in two full practices in a row, which has him trending toward returning to action Sunday against the Rams, barring any setbacks. The Colts will release their final Week 4 injury report Friday, when it will be known whether Richardson will enter Sunday's contest without a designation. According to JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site, head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that Richardson hasn't yet cleared the NFL's five-step concussion protocol, but the signal-caller's return to a full session Wednesday has him trending toward being available Sunday against the Rams.

Targeting Week 4 return
Richardson (concussion) won't play Sunday at Baltimore, but the quarterback is optimistic about his chances of playing Week 4 against the Rams, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: At this stage, Richardson -- who didn't practice this week -- remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, but if the quarterback is able to make tangible progress in the coming days, he'll target a return to action versus Los Angeles. In Richardson's absence this weekend, Gardner Minshew will draw the start against the Ravens.

Richardson made his first career start in Saturday's preseason opener against the Bills. The rookie completed seven of his 12 pass attempts for 67 yards and rushed twice for seven yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
Analysis: Richardson's first taste of NFL action produced mixed results. Immediately after completing his first two pass attempts, the No. 4 overall pick airmailed his target running a short route and was intercepted with ease. It's not fair to criticize a 21-year-old in his first start in a tough road environment against a Bills defense boosted by the healthy return of safety Damar Hamlin. Starting vs. Bills on Saturday
Richardson will start Saturday's preseason contest in Buffalo, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Richardson has been dominating first-team reps as of late, after having alternated with Gardner Minshew earlier in training camp. The Colts haven't yet named a starter for Week 1, but the rookie first-round pick will get a chance to showcase his talents under center Saturday. Dominating first-team reps
Richardson is taking "practically all the first-team reps" at Thursday's practice, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: After alternating days with Gardner Minshew at the start of training camp, Richardson has dominated first-team reps in consecutive practices (Tuesday/Thursday) since missing Monday's session to recover from a procedure on his nasal septum. While this doesn't mean he's the Week 1 starter, it can only help to get more work with the guys who will be blocking for him and catching his passes if the Colts decide to enter the season with the rookie under center.

Richardson, who recently underwent a nasal septum procedure, returned to practice Tuesday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Analysis: Richardson missed Monday's session but was back out there Tuesday. He handled first-team QB reps, which he continues to split in an ongoing rotation with veteran Gardner Minshew. The report also indicated that the rookie first-rounder currently checks in at around 250 pounds, up from his NFL Combine mark of 244 pounds. Richardson will miss Monday's practice after having a procedure to correct his nasal septum, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: The rookie QB practiced over the weekend and reportedly has a chance to rejoin his teammates as soon as Tuesday. Splitting first-team reps
Richardson and Gardner Minshew are splitting first-team reps in 7-on-7s Thursday, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.
Analysis: The Colts seem open to starting Richardson as soon as Week 1 if he looks ready, rather than defaulting to Minshew's experience and track record of competence. The fourth overall pick is miles ahead of his veteran counterpart (and most other pro QBs) when it comes to physical traits, combining a strong arm with wide-receiver speed (4.44 40) and linebacker size (6-4, 244). Even if he doesn't start the season opener, Richardson will take the field at some point during his rookie year.
